It wasn’t until living in NYC that I heard of this place called Fire Island that everyone flocked too during the summer to escape the city heat. Hamptons was typically the place I thought everyone went to for a weekend away. A few years ago was the first time I went to Fire Island and ever since then it has become one of my favorite places to unwind, relax and fully embrace beach life.
In the past years when I have headed to Fire Island it has typically been with friends and Matt. We became regulars renting a house on Ocean Beach and cramming one too many people into a bungalow home. Nevertheless, it was always such a fun weekend and one to remember.
This past Christmas, Matt’s parents surprised all the kids with a gift of renting a home in Fire Island, this time in Kismet. I was so excited to try a new area and get back to the summer place I fell in love with. These past two weekend I have come and gone, getting to the rental as much as I could and maximizing family time and beating the heat.
Fire Island is the larger center island of the outer barrier islands parallel to the south shore of Long Island. It contains different hamlets (communities) within the beach community with Ocean Beach and Kismet being two of them. You take a ferry over from Long Island and there are absolutely no cars allowed which by far is one of my favorite parts about this beach town, it is the totally opposite from living in NYC! The island is dog friendly and the home we rented was four houses form the beach making it easy for everyone to get on and off the beach whenever they wanted. The atmosphere is relaxed and extremely casual and consists of beach time and grilling out as much as possible. Also, the sunsets this summer have been unreal, we watched them both from the beach and the dock in town.
