What an incredible weekend away we had upstate in the Catskills, celebrating a family member’s wedding. From the minute we arrived we were surrounded by rolling mountains, lush greens and zero cell phone service, which I have to admit was so nice to disconnect for a bit. Everywhere you looked took your breath away and it was a much needed escape from the concreate jungle I call home. It was easy to see why this couple (who also lives in NYC, but escapes up here during the summer) wanted to have their wedding here.
We stayed at Hotel Mountain Brook which was one of the most charming experiences. It was a quaint B&B and the chef/owner of the hotel cooked up the most delicious breakfast for you each morning. They had a huge wrap around porch and a fire-pit where you could spend your evenings relaxing and catching up with others. It was a really great find for the price point – highly recommend for anyone visiting the Catskills region.
When we weren’t on the hotel property or by the lake we decided to take a family hike to one of the most beautiful lookout points nearby. It was a really easy hike too, so a good option if looking for something to do with the whole family. Most of the events of the weekend took place in different areas of the Onteora Club in which the bride’s parents have a summer home. The community is warm and welcoming and every inch of property throughout is more charming than the last. The couple got married in a library within the community that the bride’s great great uncle built and the bride and her family lived in for 16 summers while growing up. The reception was at the Deer Mountain Inn, which was one of the coolest venues (beautiful lodge décor and unique rooms inside, and huge outdoor space with fire pits, lawn games, a dance floor, and a large tent set up where dinner was served). This is the first wedding that I’ve been to where the meal was served family style and I loved it – you were able to try everything and it made for a fun and more relaxing vibe. Every aspect of the weekend was so meaningful and it was so fun getting to experience and be part of it with them.
If you ever are looking for a fun getaway from NYC, definitely keep this area in mind!!
