SAVANNAH FORSYTH PARK
August 4, 2015

Even thought it’s Tuesday and we are back to the work week, I honestly can say I had one of the most memorable weekends in Savannah. Matt surprised me for my birthday with a trip down south, knowing I have been wanting to visit for years. The charm, history and southern cooking has my name all over it! With only being an hour and a half flight from NYC we took off later afternoon on Friday and spent the weekend taking it all in.

We stayed at The Westin which is located right across the river. We initially chose to stay here because we could pay for it with points (Matt and I both use the Starwood American Express card – such a great way to earn points towards free hotel rooms), and while we were a bit hesitant to stay in a hotel that is technically outside the city, I’m so glad we did. There is a free ferry service that runs about every twenty minutes from the hotel across the water to the hub of Savannah, River Street and the ferry ride itself is either ten minutes if picking up from another hotel, or two minutes if crossing the river directly. Staying here gave us the benefit of having a pool to dive into after a hot and humid packed day and a great view of the city of Savannah itself. If traveling with kids, I really think this would be the hotel to stay in.

On Saturday morning Matt and I decided to get up early and try and beat the heat (and crowds), and head to the picturesque Forsyth Park where we snapped these pictures. All over Savannah the tress are covered with Spanish moss adding lots of extra character. As we strolled through the park we stumbled upon a farmers market where we picked up a few bakery items and tried a cold brew coffee. We enjoyed taking our time, chatting with some locals, and taking in the scene.

Not too far from the park there is a well know place called, Back in the Day Bakery. They are known to have the best cupcakes around and while I am kicking myself for not making it there this time, it will be at the top of my to-do list next time I am back. Seriously, Savannah had the BEST food – there is no way you could hit all of the places we wanted in the short time we had.  But I’ll do a full review of all the restaurants we did make it to later this week.
